Episode #04 - last.fm

DOWNLOAD THE SHOW (13 Mb MP3 file)

last.fm is, in my humble opinion, one of the best and most overlooked sites for both music lovers looking to discover new music and indie artists looking to promote their music. It's a very sophisticated music recommendation and social networking site, and I give a big plug for it in this episode.

Here's an example of a last.fm chart. This one shows the 5 most recent tracks I've played on my computer. It's updated dynamically, and links to my complete last.fm profile:

Jay, loving the show as always, but I have to offer my first bit of a critique. . .

There were many angles of last.fm that I feel were left out. Specifically, the ability to join groups, then recommend artists to that entire group...there's a lot of viral promotion at play there.

It was very informative, but felt like it was a bit too short on info.

Cheers;
Jason

Hey Jason! Yeah, you're totally right. My intention has been to keep the show short 'cus I felt like I went on a little through the first couple. What I really wanted people to do with this show was get a sense of what last.fm is about, and hopefully sign up for both personal and artist/label accounts. I know you are already a user of the site so a lot of this stuff is probably pretty obvious to you.

One of the things that is neat to me about last.fm is that many artists will already have accounts and fans that they can find through the site without having done anything! In fact, I found the site originally because I was doing a Goggle search for Uncle Seth, and I stumbled across someone who had played a bunch of our tracks and had them in his profile.

I do plan to do another show, probably a couple, covering more of these features - stay tuned!
