Episode #05 - Search Engine Optimization for Artist websites
DOWNLOAD THE SHOW (15 Mb MP3 file)
Search engine optimization (SEO) has been a big deal in web marketing for a few years now. While you can spend a lot of money hiring someone to do your SEO, there are some basics that every band (and indeed, everyone who has a website!) should know.
I refer in this episode to a presentation I originally did at The Big Schmooze, a great music industry event here in Toronto put on by my friend Ellen Drake. Here's a PDF version of "Search Engine Optimization for Band Websites" - it's around 360 Kb.
Music:
+nurse - "Daylight Savings Time"
Check out the +nurse myspace site to download this and other tracks

Your advice: at work. When I first heard this episode, Insomnia Radio's google results for "indie music podcast" (a common search term) came in somewhere near page 4 or 5.
I simply added "Insomnia Radio: Indie Music Podcast" to my titlebar in wordpress, and now that same search term yields IR as the 5th result on PAGE ONE!
Jay Moonah: Music Marketing Mastah!

Nice! If people learn one thing about basic search engine optimization, it's the value of writing good title tags.
In the case of your site Jason, you've probably got tonnes of incoming links to start, so a change like that will have a big immediate impact. The same results are certainly not promised for all sites, but you can see that there is definitely an impact that these things have.
